About REO Manheim Marketplace

REO Manheim Marketplace is our vision — a combination of adaptive reuse, hard work and a big leap of faith. Family is at the heart of everything we do. Together with our son, Adam Kline, we have transformed the former Bickel’s Snack Foods facility at 51 North Main Street into a destination location.

We were looking for a property in town that we could purchase and restore; we wanted to do our part in redeveloping Manheim. We were inspired by JP and Michele Perron’s transformation of a vacant building that had its roots as an 1880s cigar warehouse, into The Booking House. Interestingly, JP, Michele and Barney are originally from Schuylkill County, with Suzanne being a Lititz native.

We purchased the 1.4 acre property in 2016 from Hanover Foods, which acquired Bickel’s in 1998. Bickel’s was founded in Lancaster in 1954 and moved to Manheim in 1963. Production at the facility was moved to Hanover’s headquarters in February 2001 and for the next 15 years Hanover used the facility for warehouse distribution. And while many remember the facility as Bickel’s, the property’s history goes back even further.

One of the buildings on the property was once the site of one of Manheim’s oldest hotel tavern – the King of Prussia, which later became the Eagle Hotel, and then the Globe Hotel.

The name REO Manheim Marketplace pays tribute to its heritage as an REO car and truck dealership. It was founded by E.S Zimmerman as Zimmerman’s Repair Shop and was Manheim’s first auto dealer in 1907. The business was purchased by Zimmerman’s brother-in-law, J. Harvey Spahr, after he returned from WWI. It was renamed J. Harvey Spahr and remained an REO automobile dealership into the 1930’s when REO began focusing on larger trucks. At that time, Spahr added an Oldsmobile dealership. REO stands for Ransom Eli Olds, the founder of Oldsmobile.

We are excited to share this historical destination with you— a place to connect, celebrate and enjoy the company of family and friends. It is with warm regards and deep gratitude that we say, Welcome to REO Manheim Marketplace!
